Description

Alocasia reginula Black Velvet is a prized for its thick, velvety near black leaves and sharp silver veining that sits in strong contrast across the dark surface. The foliage has a matte texture with slightly raised veins, giving it depth and structure even in softer light. This species stays relatively small compared to many other Alocasia, making it well suited to shelves, plant cabinets or smaller indoor spaces. Best grown in bright indirect light with consistent warmth and humidity. A strong choice for collectors who appreciate dramatic foliage in a manageable size.

Care Guide

Light
Bright indirect light is ideal. It tolerates slightly lower light than larger Alocasia, but growth will slow and foliage may lose intensity. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the velvety leaves.

Water
Allow the top few centimetres of mix to dry slightly before watering. Water thoroughly, then allow excess to drain freely. Do not let the plant sit in water, as Black Velvet is prone to root rot if kept too wet.

Temperature
Maintain temperatures between 18 and 26°C. Avoid cold draughts, air conditioning blasts, or sudden temperature drops, as this species dislikes instability.

Humidity
Prefers humidity above 60 percent. Higher humidity supports steady growth and helps prevent crisping at the leaf edges. Ideal for plant cabinets or naturally humid rooms.

Medium
Grow in a chunky, well draining aroid mix. Combine orchid bark, perlite and peat moss or coco based components to allow airflow around the roots. Good drainage is essential for this species.

Fertiliser
Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced foliage fertiliser at reduced strength. Reduce or pause feeding through cooler months when growth slows.

Please Note

Unless stated, plants are shipped in their nursery pots, as shown in the photos.

Minor blemishes or imperfections on foliage are normal and do not affect plant health. Each plant is unique, so size, colour, and shape may vary slightly.

Please choose carefully — some plants may be toxic to people or pets if ingested.

Decorative pots and plants are sold separately.
